Stormwater Filtration Foam Solutions
Rempac Foam supplies and fabricates reticulated polyurethane foam for stormwater filtration systems and Best Management Practice (BMP) devices. With decades of foam conversion expertise and an established network of reticulated foam suppliers, we deliver precision-cut filter media for catch basin inserts, cartridge-based filtration systems, and custom BMP configurations — built to your specifications and available from a domestic, U.S.-based source.
What Is Reticulated Foam?
Reticulated polyurethane foam is a highly open-cell material defined by its skeletal, lattice-like structure. Unlike conventional foam, reticulated foam has had its cell membranes removed, leaving only the structural polymer struts and creating a material engineered for high-flow filtration applications. Polyether-based grades are preferred for water-contact environments, offering superior resistance to hydrolysis and long-term performance in wet and submerged conditions.
- 95–98% open void volume — allows high-volume water flow with minimal resistance
- Depth-loading filtration — traps particles within the cell structure rather than on the surface, extending service life
- Non-biodegradable — maintains structural and filtration performance in continuous wet environments
- Chemical resistant — compatible with sediment, oils, and organic materials typically present in stormwater runoff

How Reticulated Foam Performs in Stormwater Filtration
In stormwater applications, reticulated foam functions as a depth-loading filter medium. As water passes through its interconnected open-cell structure, suspended sediment, debris, oils, and particulates are captured progressively throughout the foam’s depth — rather than accumulating on a single surface layer. This behavior is what makes reticulated foam well-suited to the high-volume, variable-load conditions of stormwater:
- Handles surge flow without bypassing
- Captures a broad range of particle sizes depending on PPI grade selected
- Can be staged in layers — coarser grades upstream, finer grades downstream — to optimize capture across the particle spectrum
- Allows servicing and replacement without disturbing the host BMP device structure
Stormwater Applications
Rempac supplies reticulated foam filter media for a range of stormwater filtration configurations:
Catch Basin Inserts
Catch basin inserts filter stormwater at the point of entry before runoff reaches the storm sewer system. Reticulated foam serves as both a primary filter element and a pre-filter layer in these devices. Rempac supplies foam elements cut to the specific dimensions and PPI grades required by each insert design.
Cartridge-Based Vault and Centralized Filter Systems
Cartridge-based BMP systems deploy foam elements within replaceable filter cartridges that can be serviced and exchanged in the field. Rempac fabricates foam inserts — in disk, cylindrical, block, or hollow-roller configurations — to match each cartridge system’s geometry and flow requirements.
Pre-Filtration Ahead of Specialty Media
Reticulated foam is commonly used as a pre-filter upstream of activated carbon, zeolite, biochar, or other specialty treatment media. Coarser foam grades remove bulk sediment and debris, protecting finer treatment media from premature clogging and extending the system’s overall service interval.

Selecting the Right PPI Grade
PPI (pores per inch) is the primary specification variable for reticulated foam in filtration applications — it defines the foam’s cell size and determines what particle sizes it captures. Rempac sources and supplies reticulated foam across the full PPI range used in stormwater filtration:
PPI Range |
Cell Size |
Typical Stormwater Use |
|---|---|---|
| 10–20 PPI | Coarse | Pre-filtration — debris, leaves, coarse sediment capture |
| 30–45 PPI | Medium | Intermediate — fine sediment and suspended solids |
| 60+ PPI | Fine | Fine filtration, biological media support, oil/water separation |

Multi-density configurations — where two or more PPI grades are bonded into a single laminated element — are also available, providing staged filtration in a single component. Rempac can assist in identifying the appropriate grade or combination for your system’s design requirements.
Fabrication Capabilities
Rempac converts bulk reticulated foam into finished filter media elements through in-house fabrication. We work directly with BMP device manufacturers and engineering teams to produce foam components that fit your system’s geometry and performance requirements.
Custom Die-Cutting & Profiling
Stormwater BMP devices use non-standard foam shapes — disks, rounds, hollow cylinders, and irregular profiles. Rempac die-cuts and profiles reticulated foam to precise dimensions with consistent part-to-part repeatability.
Multi-Density Laminated Panels
For applications requiring staged filtration in a single element, Rempac produces laminated foam panels with coarse-to-fine PPI layers bonded together using in-house adhesive and lamination processes.
Specialty-Treated Foam
Antimicrobial and oleophilic (oil-absorbing) foam grades are available through Rempac’s established supplier network for applications requiring targeted treatment capability.
Domestic Quick-Turn Supply
As a U.S.-based fabricator, Rempac offers shorter lead times and more responsive restocking for replacement media programs — a meaningful advantage for municipal maintenance programs that operate on regular service cycles.

Government & Municipal Procurement
Rempac is registered on SAM.gov as an active federal contractor, supporting procurement by government agencies, municipal departments of public works, and state departments of transportation seeking stormwater compliance products.
SAM.gov Registration Details:
